Our Story

2021 marks the twenty-year anniversary since we started Resilica in a small, shared workshop in the back streets of Hackney, East London.

The idea for the material emerged initially from our founders research project at Sheffield Hallam University Research Institute in 1997, which was concerned about the stockpiling of recycled glass, taking place as a direct response to the newly introduced landfill tax at the time. New uses for waste glass needed to be found, as it was becoming too costly to dispose of it (environmentally and financially), so with funding from the Department of Trade and Industry we started to develop an innovative, new material.

After four years of research and development, the business was set in motion. We moved to London, with our first commission from renowned architect Sarah Wigglesworth to make and install Resilica® in the kitchen of her remarkable eco-build, ‘Straw Bale House’ in 2001 which was featured in the very first series of Grand Designs.

We were actually a bit too early back in 2001, but the world is catching up. As a business, we are not interested in being the biggest, but we do want to be proud of what we supply. Over the years various ‘advisors’ have tried to tell us we are to focused on the product, but it was critical to us that it was the best it could be and all the subsequent years spent obsessing about the details have brought us here.

We set out to do one thing and to do it well… We only sell RESILICA surfaces and are not distracted by anything else.

Now in Hastings, we have invested heavily into the R&D, our factory and technology required to collect, process and turn waste glass into the best recycled glass surface in the UK, and at a large enough scale to satisfy most requirements.

Having refined and perfected the material over many years, we are still an independent, British, multi-award winning business, consistently achieving the most exacting standards of production and finish with every project we undertake, and proud of what we have achieved.
